SJPA is a voluntary, non-profit organization composed of paralegals, students, vendors, and sponsors who study and/or work in a variety of areas in the legal field. SJPA members are dedicated to promoting the paralegal profession by networking, offering continuing legal education classes, mentoring students, and educating the public.
A bit of our history:
- In June 1985, the SJPA became the 33rd association member of the National Federation of Paralegal Associations which represents paralegal associations throughout the world. SJPA also continues to play an active role in the New Jersey State Bar Association’s Paralegal Committee.
- In 2010, we began offering our members the opportunity to be credentialed through the New Jersey Certified Paralegal Program.
- In May 2013, SJPA celebrated its 30-year anniversary of incorporation and continues to grow and support the paralegal community.
SJPA hosted its 7th Annual PES (Paralegal Educational Symposium) on March 23, 2018. Held at the Doubletree Suites, in Mount Laurel, NJ, a full slate of informative seminars offered a variety of topics for all levels of paralegals. Thank you to all of our speakers for their wonderful presentations including "Putting Your Best Foot Forward: Networking on Social Media", "The Paralegal and Consumer Fraud: What is It and What is Involved", "Protecting Your Law Firm and Clients from a Targeted Cyber Attack", "Education Law and the Paralegal", "How to Deal with Difficult People in the Workplace", "Analyzing Medical Records for Paralegals: Creating Summaries and Chronologies", "15K PIP Limits, Health Insurance Primary and Appeals", "Working as a Paralegal: A Roundtable Discussion" and "Differences Among NJ, PA, and Federal Civil Courts for Paralegals". All attendees ended the day with a very informative and interactive Ethics presentation by Lori Hager, Esquire. If you haven't been to one of her presentations you've missed out - Lori is always educational and engaging! And a special thank you to our Vendors and Sponsors that helped make this event possible and affordable. Make sure to utilize their services - they support us and we support them!
SJPA is again offering a $1,000 scholarship to a student pursuing a paralegal education. You can download the application here - The deadline for responding is April 16, 2018! If you have any questions feel free to contact Deborah Naglee at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Speaking of becoming involved, SJPA could use an extra hand. Committees such as PES, Newsletter, NJCP, and Scholarship always need help – sometimes just for an hour or two a month; sometimes just for one dinner meeting. Additionally, we're always looking for paralegals willing to speak with students at the various local paralegal programs about SJPA and the paralegal profession. No professional speaking skills necessary!
Don't forget to take a look at our calendar for other upcoming events including CLE's, charity events, dinner meetings and board meetings.
We look forward to seeing you at an upcoming event.
Please feel free to contact me directly if you have any questions or want to become more involved - WE'D LOVE TO HAVE YOU JOIN US!!
